Victorian Opera presents The Play of Herod
Dates: 2 - 5 October 2014
Address: Chapel of the Holy Spirit, 887 Swanston Street, Parkville, Victoria 3052
Straight from the pages of the 12th century Fleury Playbook comes this hauntingly beautiful medieval drama that combines the traditional Christmas story with the story of a power-hungry King and the infamous 'massacre of the innocents'.
On their way to the prophesised birth of a new king, Three Wise Men visit the powerful King Herod. Their story of the miraculous birth makes the King fearful for his throne. When the Three Wise Men trick Herod to ensure the resting place of the baby Jesus remains a secret, the furious King orders that all young boys under the age of two be put to death. Performed by the Victorian Youth Opera from a new arrangement by Victorian Opera's Artistic Director Richard Mills, The Play of Herod takes on a unique sound quality in the magnificent acoustics of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
The Play of Herod is supported by Victorian Youth Opera Patron Miss Betty Amsden OAM and the Victorian Opera Education Syndicate
