The Islamic Museum of Australia shares the rich artistic heritage and historical contributions of Muslims in Australia and abroad through the display of various artworks and historical artefacts. The museum is located just 10 kilometres outside the CBD in the inner northern suburb of Thornbury.

This stunning contemporary building backs onto the famous, leafy Merri Creek Trail. The on site cafe, Modern Middle Eastern, serves delicious breakfasts and lunches and is run by Masterchef finalist, Samira El Khafir.

The museum holds regular events, screenings, lectures, exhibition openings, workshops and the monthly unique Artist Salon. Visit the IMA website or join the mailing list for the latest museum news and events. The museum features five permanent galleries and a visiting exhibition space.

The IMA collects, preserves and showcases original art pieces which reflect the museums vision in sharing the Australian Muslim experience. These include unique objects, information and other crafts sourced from Australia and around the Muslim world, as well as an exciting collection of contemporary art by Australian Muslim artists.

Australian Muslim History explores the Muslim presence in Australia predates white settlement with a long and varied history which continues to contribute to the cultural life in Australia today.

A genuine curiosity exists among the general public about the beliefs and practices of Muslims. Praying five times daily, Islamic dress, Halal food and Muslim festivals are among the topics explored in this informative gallery, providing a deeper understanding of Muslim life.

experience interactive displays sharing these marvellous inventions and discoveries which helped shape our modern world.

The museum collaborates with local and international artists and institutions to present quality visiting exhibitions.
