Getting from A to B efficiently is usually the aim when walking through the city. But in Melbourne, a wrong turn down an alley could lead to the kind of encounter you least expect. Since 2001, The City of Melbourne’s annual Laneway Commissions have seen local and international artists create temporary works for sites across the city. Light installations, interactive sound-scapes, suspended sculptures, even mobile confessionals have enticed people off busy streets and snapped them out of complacency. Works are displayed for anything from a few weeks to several months; check the Public Arts Program for details.
