This Naturewise Conservation Holidays program is at the Woodlands Historic Park, a short 20 minute drive from Melbourne city. Although close to Melbourne's modern urbanised setting, the park provides a fascinating glimpse of the landscapes and wildlife seen by European settlers in the 1840s.

Four hundred hectares of Red-gum Grassy Woodlands, known as the 'Back Paddock', have been fenced off as a Nature Reserve and identified as suitable habitat for the critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot (EBB), Conservation volunteers and Parks Victoria have teamed up to reinstate a population of EBBs in the reserve. The species is now considered extinct in Victoria's wild due to predation by foxes and cats, and disappearance of 99 per cent of the state's native grasslands.

Woodlands Historic Park really comes to life at dusk with kangaroos, wallabies, possums and other wildlife springing into action. On this exciting wildlife discovery they will venture deep into the park for an illuminated discovery of nocturnal wildlife. Naturewise Conservation Holidays will be looking out for the Eastern Barred Bandicoots and learning about the program to save them from extinction. They start the evening with spectacular sunset views from Gellibrand Hill, followed by an Aussie barbecue under the stars.

Conservation Volunteers offers Naturewise Conservation Holidays, they are quality, small group ecotour experiences where you get to make a real difference to the conservation of Australia's unique environment.

Naturewise Conservation Holidays embraces the principles of responsible travel combining conservation with exploration. Their aim is to connect visitors with Australia's beautiful and unique natural areas, while helping to ensure their future preservation. The Naturewise programs are award recognised and Ecotourism certified.

Naturewise Conservation Holidays range from two days to two weeks. Each program offers the opportunity to visit unique destinations, get close to nature and explore the great outdoors, while contributing to conservation.

The time spent undertaking conservation activities typically makes up 30 to 40 per cent of the trip with the other time spent touring such as bush walks, Island tours, wildlife viewing and visiting National Parks.

No experience is required to participate in a Naturewise Conservation Holidays program, though you should be reasonably fit and active and declare any pre-existing medical conditions at the time of booking.

Program prices include accommodation, meals, program leader, transfers from the designated pick up point, park or reserve entry fees and scheduled activities. All programs are led by an experienced guide, and on some programs you are joined by visiting researchers.
