What’s an Australian restaurant? Try this: on the banks of the Murray, with trees floodlit at night, and an informal mood that’s relaxed enough for family dining. Don’t be deceived by the apparently casual air. The menu is imaginative and the cooking assured, the waiters are as easy-going as they are professional and knowledgeable, and the wine list is a knockout - enough to justify a month of dining here. The menu offers large, small and smaller dishes. Try the house-made duck-neck sausage with caramelised apple, or Murray cod fishcakes to start, or perhaps a boned grilled quail with cous cous and pomegranate sauce that can be entree or main-course sized. There’s an impressive ability to blend savoury and sweet flavours, as in succulent roast duck with spaetzle, spinach and muscatels. But is the duck better than the house-aged steaks? Desserts don’t always live up to the high standards, as shown by a too-firm panna cotta, but there are always the local fortifieds.
