Barham Golf and Country Club
In 1913 the first golf in Barham, was played by about 20 locals, in a holding area for stock crossing the river, called 'Punt Paddock'. The start of World War 1 in 1914 saw the game go into recess until 1919. After the war the fledgling the club decided to move to its present site in Moulamein Road, which was the Barham Race Course, sharing the clubhouse and racecourse surrounds. In 1932 the Golf Club bought out the race club and in 1947 established the current site of the clubhouse. When irrigating the course became a reality the sand scrapes where upgraded in 1960 to the magnificent grass greens that you see today. The first annual tournament was held in 1936, and this event, which attracts many visitors, is now run over four days. The Border Open Pro-Am held in mid September annually was first held in 1957 and is the longest running two-day Pro-Am event held in Australia. Many famous names have won this event including Craig Parry, Stewart Ginn, Ian Stanley, Michael Cahill, Tim Elliott, Darren Cole and the club professional Rob McNaughton. In February 1993 the Barham Golf Club and the Barham and District Services Memorial Club amalgamated. With the purchase of the Barham All Seasons Motor Lodge in November 2000 and the Barham Golf Resort in October 2002 has provided further impetus to all areas of the Clubs' operations. The major highlight at the Barham Golf and Country Club in recent years has been the opening of four sensational new holes, two new greens and driving range designed by golf course architect Ross Watson in August 2003. These new holes have given a new dimension to the existing layout. Barham is a course that you must play to fully appreciate what it now has to offer.
