Savernake Day Tours draws upon the extensive archival, natural and historic assets of Savernake Station, a historic pastoral property 20 minutes north of Yarrawonga. It has a variety of features, it is the ideal half or full day tour from Yarrawonga or Corowa. Listed by NSW Heritage Council. National Trust award.
The historic Homestead features 22 rooms of extensive and fascinating displays, with a fully guided tour to appreciate the pioneering lifestyle of the 1800s. Hear the amazing stories and see the genuine artefacts and displays, in a memorable two hour tour.
The 400 hectare box-pine woodland is a pristine area of native vegetation featuring ancient pines and diverse understorey. Spring is the high season, but the forest is fascinating all year round.
The biodiversity is astonishing, with long lists of native flora and fauna, ranging from kangaroos and wallabies to stunning orchids and tiny ground creatures.
The Lignum Wetland provides a contrast to the forest, being habitat for water birds and a range of aquatic plants and lignum bush, ideal cover for small native mammals.
Aboriginal cultural sites are fascinating areas depicting the lifestyle of the Pangerang people, with areas of scar trees and middens. A tour of the significant nearby Boat Rock hill will also enhance an understanding of pre-European culture.
From the earliest years, wool production was the focus of Savernake Station. The 1912 pine woolshed and Shearers' Quarters are still fully functional. They include several displays about pastoral history and a small Museum.
The 1876 wattle and daub Selector's Hut is a rare pioneer structure, displaying earliest pioneering lifestyles and retaining its original authenticity, as does the simple style of the nearby 1890s Boundary Rider's Hut.
The adjacent Antique Machinery Shed is an astonishing old structure which houses an array of farming vehicles, equipment and implements.
