Venture four hours east of Melbourne to find this picture-book village, stretching along a narrow sandy peninsula on the shores of the Gippsland Lakes. Strolling along the water's edge and watching the sailing boats glide by is a local sunset tradition.

Boating and fishing

Boat lovers and summer waterskiers are drawn to Metung's relaxed village lifestyle. Take a cruise or hire your own yacht to explore the gentle waters of the Gippsland Lakes. Small runabouts are also available for hire. Metung and surrounds also offer excellent fishing – try your hand at hooking bream, tailor, flathead, King George whiting and prawns in summer.

Food and wine

Head to a restaurant for quality local seafood and wine. There is an excellent variety of waterfront restaurants and cafes, or find a sunny spot opposite the village green to enjoy a picnic. Watch the pelicans eat their lunch outside the Metung Pub everyday at midday.

Contemporary art

Metung's natural beauty attracts many artists. Visit farm studios, gardens and galleries to view locally crafted sculptures, jewellery and paintings.
