A beach on the river

Tocumwal is the perfect place to enjoy the best of the Murray. Choose from 24 riverside beaches close to town for camping, bushwalking, horse riding, fishing for Murray cod, bird watching, canoeing and swimming.

Native wildlife

Go bird watching on a bushwalk by the river or visit the nearby Ulupna Island, a flora and fauna reserve, to see koalas and kangaroos in their natural habitat.

Sacred land

Tocumwal takes its name from the Aboriginal word, 'Tocumival', meaning 'deep hole', a reference to a waterhole in the area sacred to local Aboriginal tribes. When settled, it was used as a river port, and it quickly became a major transport centre for the region's agricultural products.

During World War II, Tocumwal Aerodrome also became the largest RAAF training base in the Southern Hemisphere and was used as a training base for liberator bomber pilots.
