The Dax Centre is like no other museum or gallery. It conducts learning programs to promote mental health and wellbeing utilising an archive of over 15,000 items of art created by people with lived experience of mental ill-health or psychological trauma. Named the Cunningham Dax Collection, it is the only heritage-listed art collection in Victoria and one of only three such collections in the world.
Exhibitions are themed to explore aspects of mental (ill) health and emotional wellbeing. The works on display are used to offer greater understanding of these topics through the art, making issues accessible to the community through all stages of schooling and beyond..
The Dax Centre is a learning organisation that conducts rich and active education programs using the Cunningham Dax Collection to augment understanding of mental health issues. They create spaces for exploration of issues surrounding mental ill-health and psychological trauma, thus, aiming to reduce their associated stigma and mystery.
The Dax Centre is co-located in the University of Melbourne and complements the many other art and cultural programs and collections found there. It is accessible by public transport and there is adequate parking.
The Dax Centre relies on donations to continue its programs promoting mental health.
