Station Pier, Port Melbourne
Sail into Melbourne and dock at Station Pier in the sunny bayside suburb of Port Melbourne, just four kilometres from the city centre.
Station Pier has direct transport links by road and public transport to Melbourne, Australia's second largest city and the capital of Victoria.
Melbourne is renowned for its labyrinthine laneways, which house the city's coffee obsession, gastronomic culture, hidden bars, eclectic fashion boutiques, and world-class art galleries. Energising green spaces, a uniform love of large sporting events plus rollicking live music and theatre scenes give the city its liveliness, while a mix of heritage buildings and cutting-edge architecture create fascinating streetscapes.
Explore the city's fringe – the suburbs that flaunt their individual characters. Be sure to spend time around Station Pier in Port Melbourne, with its palm tree-lined paths, beachside dining options, and high-end fashion.
Get out of the city
It's easy to travel further afield than the city from the cruise ship terminal. In less than an hour you can be watching the penguins at Phillip Island, tasting wines by the seaside in Mornington Peninsula, soaking in natural mineral spas in Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges, or floating over the Yarra Valley's wineries by balloon.
Safe and welcoming Station Pier offers four dedicated berths, ensuring it is well equipped to cope with the demand of the growing number of cruise ships. A Meet, Greet and Farewell program makes it easy to travel to and from the recently refurbished terminal. Friendly staff will help organise a limousine, taxi, shuttle bus or tram into the city.
Things to do
Heading into Melbourne's city centre from your cruise ship is quick and easy thanks to a range of transport options. The city's legendary laneways, revered cafes, inspirational galleries and exclusive boutiques are just a tram, bus or taxi ride away.
Taking Melbourne by tram
Melbourne is the only city in Australia that retains a network of trams and a scenic joy ride on one of the iconic trams is a must when you're in town. Luckily it's the most convenient way to travel from your ship at Station Pier to the city centre.
The Route 109 tram to Box Hill is conveniently located at the end of Station Pier. It takes you through Port Melbourne, past the Crown Entertainment Complex and across the Yarra River before turning right into Collins Street to take you to the Melbourne Town Hall and the heart of the city.
Travelling with myki
To travel by tram you'll need a myki card, Melbourne's ticket to travel on local trains, trams and buses. You can purchase the plastic myki smartcard and prepay your trip from the Public Transport Victoria counter located in the upper level foyer of the international terminal at Station Pier.
Please note, you must validate your travel by touching your myki card on one of the green myki readers on board the tram.
From the city centre you can connect with many other train, tram or bus services with your myki. Don't forget to touch on your myki when you enter a train station or board a tram or bus, and check the requirements for touching off your myki.
Circling the city
The distinctive burgundy and gold City Circle trams are a free and easy way to explore central Melbourne. The tram's circuit takes in major attractions and shopping precincts, and offers an onboard commentary.
Back to the ship
To return to Station Pier just board any westbound Route 109 tram to Port Melbourne from tram stops along Collins Street. Accessible stops are located at the end of the pier and at various city locations.
By bus or bust
Most cruise ships can make use of the one-way PTV Cruise Express Bus shuttle service to the city centre from Station Pier, express from the international terminal to the Arts Centre on St Kilda Road. The bus operates between 8am and 11.30am.
You will need to purchase a myki from the Public Transport Victoria counter located in the upper level foyer of the international terminal before you board the bus.
