From Bendigo station, head along Mitchell Street, then veer up Lyttleton Terrace to Bendigo Wholefoods, a community hub with eat-in treats and laden aisles of carefully selected kitchen supplies.

Mosey back to Queen Street to Masons of Bendigo, the town's fine dining hero and a champion of local produce.

Back onto Mitchell Street and over the highway to View Street, options are crammed helpfully close. Start at grand Wine Bank on View with its magnificent liquid library, then onward to Harvest Food and Wine for home-baked goodies.

Head south down View Street and hang a right at Bath Lane for boutique florists, clothes and furniture stores, and stop in at The Good Loaf for the weekly Bendigo Community Farmers Market (every Thursday from 2pm – 4:30pm).

Double back towards the Bendigo Visitor Centre and find Spanish-leaning El Gordo and wine bar The Dispensary tucked down Chancery Lane.

Pop out on Hargreaves Street, then left onto Williamson Street. Follow smoky aromas to The Woodhouse for Bendigo's best steak, then it's a short hop back to the station. 3km
