Start at Caldermeade Farm & Cafe, a commercial dairy where you can view milking and let the kids pet the farm animals.

It's an easy 27 kilometres to the farm cafe at Bassine Specialty Cheeses. Fill up on dairy from the resident Holstein cows in the form of cheese, milkshakes, cheesecake and Devonshire tea.

Just 14 kilometres further, seaside Kilcunda is home to fabulous Udder and Hoe, a store that showcases small-batch local produce.

A quick 26 kilometres away (longer by the coastal scenic route), The Local in inverloch is the perfect stop to pick up a coffee, a bottle of fresh Gippsland Jersey milk or to grab a bite with a provincial bent.

From there head 28 kilometres north, checking ahead to see if the award-winning Prom Country Cheese cellar door is open.

Take a break in Korumburra at the divine Borough Dept. Store – check out their small dairy fridge of local and imported cheeses, order a gooey toastie and power up with another caffeinated cuppa.

It's 80 kilometres north to Yarragon, where Gippsland Food & Wine acts as information centre and regional gourmet emporium.

If you're heading back to Melbourne, make one last stop at Warragul's String + Salt, a lovely food store that also runs cooking classes. 162km
