Overview

School's out and the fun begins. We've got a packed list of ideas for families and kids of all ages to make the most of school holiday time.

Check out school holiday workshops and programs at ACMI, where kids can learn to make their own movie, and Pinot and Picasso (strictly teetotalling), where kids can learn to paint. Zip up high above the city at Melbourne Skydeck for thrilling views, or hire a GoBoat for a cruise down the Yarra. Keen climbers will love the indoor walls at Latitude, while young surfers can tackle the waves at UrbnSurf.

There's an enormous triceratops to gape at in Melbourne Museum, films to get lost in on the big screen at IMAX, or Broadway shows on the big stage that will whisk both littlies and teens away to magical worlds.

When the sun is out, explore the Royal Botanic Gardens, and run around among the outdoor sculptures at Heide Art Museum.

In the regions, head for day hikes, picnics, bird-watching and camping – explore the You Yangs and Lerderderg State Park, not far from the city. Don't miss the tulips in bloom at the Tesselaar Tulip Festival, and colourful botanic gardens in regional towns bursting to life in the warmer weather.

Bendigo, Castlemaine and Ballarat are home to exceptional art galleries, and kids of all ages love to browse illustrations by beloved children's author Alison Lester at her gallery and bookshop in Fish Creek.
