OVG Summer 2024 Andrew Fyfe Article

Andrew Fyfe has had a long career in Australian television and even had his own children’s show called Guess What? He’s most commonly known for his live cartooning segments, and remains a well-known figure in the Australian art and entertainment scene. His distinctive satirical style blends comedy and reality.

Andrew continues to explore a range of artistic endeavours. His latest project, a solo exhibition titled Marvellous Melbourne by Fyfe, was held at Sol Gallery in Fitzroy. This exhibition featured a series of prints that depict distinctive Melbourne landmarks. The collection highlights his deep connection to the city, presenting its streets and culture with his signature playful twist.

For the cover of the summer edition of the Official Visitor Guide for Melbourne and Victoria, Andrew illustrated one of his favourite summertime city views — the Yarra River.

MELBOURNE AS HOME

Andrew grew up, lived and worked in Melbourne all his life, and this has been significantly formative to who he’s become and the art he makes. “It’s truly a part of me.”

He notes that similarly, the artistic community, with its vibrant laneways and striking sculptures, shapes the city’s identity with Melbourne’s artistic flair on full display. Beyond the creativity, it offers so much more – vast open spaces, tree-lined boulevards, and world-class food.'

'The city has it all. It has the best coffee in the world, vibrant theatre, exciting sports and beautiful beaches.'

INSPIRATION FROM THE STREETS

It’s the well-known and loved landmarks in Melbourne that fuel Andrew's creativity. “The cosy, bustling laneways with their European vibes are a constant source of inspiration. I also find deep resonance in places like the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Yarra River.”

Andrew's work takes familiar scenes and gives them a whimsical twist. “I like to highlight what people might overlook,” he says, bringing an element of humour and character to Melbourne’s everyday moments.

A WEEKEND IN VICTORIA

For a perfect weekend in Victoria for first-time visitors, Andrew suggests that the ideal way to experience both the beauty and culture of the region would be to take a boat ride down the Yarra to soak in the sights from the water, followed by a trip down the Great Ocean Road to see the Twelve Apostles.

“And to top it off, a fantastic dinner at a rooftop restaurant with breathtaking views of the skyline.”
