Top dog places
Spend your dog days in the mountains, vineyards and valleys of Victoria's High Country. There's bike trails and walking tracks, legendary drives and spectacular lookouts. Amazing food, great pubs, bakeries, breweries and beer gardens abound. We've tracked them down for you.
1. Black Dog Brewery
Break your journey at this Glenrowan craft brewery at Taminick Cellars winery. Brews are available on tap on Saturdays and Sundays, and dogs can tag along.
2. Ginger Baker
Furry friends are welcome at this relaxed café and wine bar in Bright – with all natural dog biscuits on the menu. Take a post lunch splash in the Ovens River.
3. Bright Brewery
Kick back in the sunshine at this local small batch brewery. Order a tasting tray and a great pub meal. Post your pet selfies to the brewery’s dog-dedicated Instagram.
4. Cherry Walk
Start at the waterslide on Mountbatten Avenue. Follow the southern bank of the Ovens River from Bright in the direction of Porepunkah. Cross at the suspension bridge and return. An easy 3 km, 1.5 hours return. 6 km with stick fetching and river dips.
5. BlueMill Bright
Book a pet friendly stay that’s just a short walk to central Bright. There’s a choice of self-contained cabins or lodges, all close to the bike trail and with mountain views.
6. Delatite Hotel
Head to Mansfield for good food, cold beer, craft cider and local wines. Stay for the live music or a game of pool. Furry mates welcome.
7. Mansfield Coffee Merchant
Grab a great, local roast coffee and dine al fresco with your dog. There’s an all-day menu, and the fresh produce is locally sourced.
8. Mansfield State Forest
Take a dog-friendly forest walk on the Plain Creek Loop, by the Delatite River. Start at Carter's Mill Day Reserve. Extend your walk with a Tramway Bridge detour.
9. Beechworth Gorge Scenic Walk
You’ll see granite outcrops, forest, rock pools and cascades, remnants of goldrush mining, an old mill and a magnificent stone bridge on this 7 km, 2 hour loop.
10. Woolshed Cabins
Stay in a pet friendly, two bedroom self-contained cabin. The cabins are just outside Beechworth and walking distance to the majestic Woolshed Falls.
11. Belmont at Beechworth
Put your paws up at this cycle and pet friendly cottage accommodation. Enjoy country air, mountain views and easy access to the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.
12. Brown Brothers Milawa Vineyard
Enjoy a glass of vino in the dog-friendly outdoor seating at the cellar door, share an antipasto platter from the wine bar menu and down an espresso before you hit the road.
13. Ringer Reef Vineyard
Relax with wine and a picnic at the cellar door, and take in views of Mt Buffalo. Take a vineyard tour and discover farm history – from gold prospecting, to wine.
14. Buller Wines
Visit this 100 year old vineyard in Rutherglen for a cellar door tasting and stay for lunch. Ripe at Buller Wines make doggy treats from their wine making by-product.
