Starting just east of Orbost and meandering through the great forests of East Gippsland, the Murrungowar Forest Drive showcases a range of forest types and scenery.
The drive includes a number of prescribed stops, many of which offer an insight into how East Gippsland's forests are managed for conservation and timber harvesting. You'll see old growth banksia woodland, a seedtree harvesting system, a bluegum plantation, an example of thinning harvesting, a warm temperate rainforest, an extensive regrowth stand, a mature silvertop ash forest, and the Silvicultural Systems Project.
A stop at the old Murrungowar Township will also shine a light on some of the hardships experienced by the early settlers in the region.
The route includes the opportunity to stop for picnics or short walks to Little Cabbage Tree Creek and the Falls Creek waterfalls.
