The Ninety Mile Four Wheel Drive

Best time: Seasonal (one day)

Grade: Easy – suitable for 'soft roader' all-wheel drive vehicles

Seize the rare opportunity to explore sandy tracks on Victoria's coastline, getting up close to wildlife and wetlands. This day tour comprises four four-wheel drive sections, with two accessible year-round and the remaining tracks only accessible in summer and autumn.

The route: Starting from Sale you can take a scenic detour to view the historic swing bridge near the confluence of the Thomson and Latrobe rivers.

The first four-wheel drive section (seasonal closure) requires access through a locked gate. Entry takes you into Dowds Morass State Game Reserve, with its impressive number of water birds. Be sure to keep on the track and away from wetter patches, which can be treacherous.

The next stage of your drive takes in the oil and gas pipeline compound and the Pipeline Track's seven-kilometre straight run (select 4WD and zero odometer). This track crosses a couple of small dunes, which may have soft patches. Enjoy more sandy four-wheel driving along the southern shore of Lake Victoria, and a scenic drive through banksia forest to Red Bluff picnic area.

For the final section of the tour (seasonal closure), drive through Loch Sport to the Lakes National Park. Visit Point Wilson and see right across to Paynesville from the jetty. Return to Loch Sport to wind up your tour.
