Spend a day riding along the shore of Victoria's Lake Hume on the High Country Rail Trail, a historic railway line running from Wodonga through to Old Tallangatta and out to Shelley. The 35-kilometre recreational trail is perfect for walkers, cyclists and horse riders chasing a rejuvenating day in the countryside. Be sure to pick up a local map as new sections of the trail that are being built.
Join the trail at Wodonga or pick it up anywhere along the way from Bandiana South, Ebden and Old Tallangatta to Koetong and Shelley. Sections of the trail also exist in Corryong. For those that are feeling at little adventurous, check out the climb between Darbyshire and Shelley Station, which was once Victoria's highest railway station. Some parts of the trail less accessible than others, be sure to choose an itinerary that suits your fitness level and bike type.
Along the way
Travel across the Murray River floodplains and on to the Kiewa River woodlands, full of many species of native birds. Ride past the river red gum forest and on to the sparkling waters of Lake Hume. Enjoy the fresh lakeside air with a picnic at Ebden Reserve, hire some gear for a spot of fishing or water skiing, and then cool off with a quick swim in the lake.
Delve into the region's rich history at Old Tallangatta or take the kids on a visit to Bonegilla, home of the Bonegilla Migrant Camp that was built as a military camp during World War II. Watch the sailing boats out on the water while crossing the sculptural 600-metre bridge at Sandy Creek inlet and then walk or ride through the forest towards Shelley.
What to expect
The trail is undulating to Tallangatta with some moderate gradients. The Koetong to Shelley section is all uphill at the steepest gradient trains could manage. Some sections are only suitable for mountain bikes and one section requires road riding, so be sure to check on the website for details to plan your route.
