  • Melbourne to Mansfield: 2.5hours, 290km
    Mansfield to King Valley: 1 hour, 65km
    Overnight in the King Valley

    Begin your journey in Mansfield. Fuel up with a steaming cup of joe at the Coffee Merchant, then take a short drive to Delatite Wines. Sample their range of crisp and delicate cool climate wines in their cellar door, which boasts panoramic views of Mt Buller's alpine resort.

    Drive on to award-winning winemaker Ros Ritchie's cellar door in the beautiful, historic Magnolia House, for tastings and paired seasonal bites.

    Tuck into a tasty lunch at The Produce Store in Mansfield, or travel along the Mansfield-Whitfield Road to the King Valley, known for its Italian varietals and storied Prosecco Road.

    Have lunch or book in for dinner at Dal Zotto Wines Trattoria. Pair a prosecco cocktail with a game of bocce or jump straight into sampling the winery's range. Extend your visit with a yoga in the vines session, hire an e-bike and plan a Pedal to Prosecco picnic, or join the family for their Cento Passi (100 Steps) experience — a tour around their vineyard.

    Head on to Pizzini Wines' elegant cellar door for a tasting of their range and perhaps a hands-on Italian cooking class with Katrina Pizzini. If time is on your side, drop into other family-run wineries of the region, such as Politini Wines, La Cantina and Darling Estate.

    Settle into your accommodation for the night. Choose between the vineyard cottages at Politini and Pizzini wineries, the sleekly stylish Lusso KV or head further down the valley to Myhree, where you can sleep easy at Casa Luna or elevation652 at Mt Bellevue.

    Bid a fond farewell to the heart of the King Valley, with one last stop at the picturesque King River Estate.

    Continue to Milawa, where you can fill your esky with delicious local produce. Stop at Brown Brothers winery for a tasting in their historic cellar door. Book in for a private 'Prosecco Brunch' or go next level with a hot air balloon flight over the valley, followed by a prosecco breakfast. Or, drive on to Oxley to visit Sam Miranda's chic cellar door and restaurant, where you can linger over a lunch paired with Sam's crisp Italian whites and sparklings.

    Make your way to Taminick, known for its links to bushranger Ned Kelly and home to a handful of boutique wineries, collectively known as the Glenrowan Wine Region.

    Visit the charming mud brick cellar door at Morrisons of Glenrowan to taste their big reds and crisp, fruit-driven whites paired with tasting platters of estate-grown seasonal produce. Nearby, the Booth family have been producing wines at their Taminick Cellars since 1904. For a change of pace, hop over to onsite boutique brewery Black Dog Brewery.

    Head north towards the Murray River, to the Rutherglen wine region, known for its durifs and internationally awarded muscats.

    Take your pick of the cellar doors dotted around the region, such as Morris of Rutherglen, Chambers Rosewood Vineyards and Campbells Wines. Lunch options include hatted restaurant The Terrace at All Saints Estate, Jones Winery and Thousand Pound right on the Main Street, among many others.

    Overnight in Bright

    Leave the Murray River plains and climb through the granitic, forested hills of the Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park to beautiful Beechworth.

    Most of the cellar doors here are open only by appointment so plan ahead, if possible. Impromptu trip? Pennyweight Winery are open year-round, along with Glenbosch Wine Estate and Indigo Vineyard. For something special, book an entertaining tour and tasting with winemaker and amateur historian, Vinnie Webb at his rustic Baarmutha cellar door.

    Brush up on local history at the Ned Kelly Vault courthouse and Burke Museum, or stretch your legs on one of the numerous walking tracks in and around town. Head to The Provenance Restaurant for a delicious lunch, prepared by award-winning chef Michael Ryan.

    From Beechworth, take a scenic drive to the Alpine Valleys Wine Region.

    Drop into the Gapsted Winery cellar door, which opens daily for tastings and a fine alfresco lunch. Make a stop at boutique Italian family winery Michelini, in nearby Myrtleford.

    Drive deep into the valley to picturesque Porepunkah, home to a collection of family-owned wineries with stunning views, such as Feathertop Winery and Ringer Reef Winery.

    The last stop on your journey is the town of Bright, known for its fab food, gorgeous autumnal colours and fantastic range of cycling experiences. Grab a meal at one of the many restaurants and cafes in town, or relax by the Ovens River at Bright Brewery.
