Overview

Whether you’re meeting friends for brunch or looking for a little pick-me-up while browsing bookstores, galleries, or vintage shops, you won’t need to search far in Fitzroy for a quality brew or pastry. These are some of the best spots for a coffee and cake in Fitzroy.

1. Lune Croissanterie

Lining up is an essential part of the experience at Lune Croissanterie on Rose Street, but it’s worth it to try pastry chef Kate Reid’s deliciously flaky creations. Keep it old-school with a traditional croissant or pain au chocolate, or branch out into cruffins, baklava, or sugar buns. The transparent kitchen means you can see the pastry chefs rolling, measuring and cutting with precision, just before you take your first bite.

2. Stagger Lee's

Exposed brick walls and a penchant for black mark Stagger Lee’s as a classic Melbournian café. The coffee is from sister café and roastery Proud Mary while the robust menu walks the tightrope between being a little bit fancy or curing your hangover (looking at you, Mexican breakfast tacos).

3. Industry Beans

You’ll find Industry Beans scattered throughout Melbourne but this white-washed warehouse in Fitzroy is ground zero for one of the city’s favourite coffee roasters. Take a seat and enjoy the signature brunch menu alongside an expertly prepared latte, watch the roasting team at work or browse the retail story to finesse your own coffee at home.

4. Babka Bakery

Expect challah, blintzes, and borscht at this Eastern European-influenced café, which is a favourite among carb-loving locals, who queue up daily. Babka is a great option for something a little different and grabbing a shoo fly bun for the road is a must. If lines are long, order your pastry to go and walk to Smith Reserve nearby.

5. Sir Charles Fitzroy

A café that roasts its own beans out the back is a very good thing, and even better if they serve an all-day breakfast. Sir Charles specialises in doing reliable breakfast dishes well but it’s the selection of cakes – ranging from red velvet layer cakes to molasses cookies – that will have you staying for an extra coffee or three.

6. Marios

If you can, grab a perch in the window at this bustling Melbourne institution and watch the world go by over steaming cups of coffee. Marios prides itself on its unpretentious hospitality, serving its highly flexible breakfast menu until 5pm. Keep an eye out for the ever-changing artwork from local artists scattered around the walls.

7. Bentwood

Soaked in natural light and rich warm tones, you can trust stylish Bentwood to keep up with the city’s ever-changing brunch trends. The eclectic menu ranges from the expected (smashed avo) to acai bowls, po boys and kimchi omelettes. Wash it down with single-origin coffee from Inglewood Coffee Roasters or indulge with a cheeky espresso martini.

8. Archie's All Day

Exactly as the name suggests, Archie’s globe-trotting menu is available anytime you want it. Korean Fried Chicken burger at 8am? Why not. Hotcakes at 3pm? Go for your life! The café has become a reliable favourite for morning coffee chasers as well as the laptop-touting digital nomads who stay for the day. Try to resist the daily plate of pastries temptingly placed in front of the coffee machine.

9. Sonido

Charmingly decked out in cheerful colours, Sonido is a Venezuelan café that wears its heart on its sleeve. Listen to Latin tunes while tucking into crispy arepas (cornbread wraps), empanadas or char-grilled chicken. Leave room to explore the pastry cabinet on the counter, which is filled with South American favourites like alfajores, Portuguese tarts and pandebono.

10. Burnside

Small yet mighty, Burnside looks after Fitzroy’s early birds by slinging fresh poured coffees from 6:30am. If you decide to skip the sunrise and sleep in, you’re still welcome to grab a seat at one of the small wooden tables and pick from the selection of hand-made sandwiches, croissants, slices and brownies filling the glass cabinet.
