1. Lune Croissanterie
Lining up is an essential part of the experience at Lune Croissanterie on Rose Street, but it’s worth it to try pastry chef Kate Reid’s deliciously flaky creations. Keep it old-school with a traditional croissant or pain au chocolate, or branch out into cruffins, baklava, or sugar buns. The transparent kitchen means you can see the pastry chefs rolling, measuring and cutting with precision, just before you take your first bite.
2. Stagger Lee's
Exposed brick walls and a penchant for black mark Stagger Lee’s as a classic Melbournian café. The coffee is from sister café and roastery Proud Mary while the robust menu walks the tightrope between being a little bit fancy or curing your hangover (looking at you, Mexican breakfast tacos).
3. Industry Beans
You’ll find Industry Beans scattered throughout Melbourne but this white-washed warehouse in Fitzroy is ground zero for one of the city’s favourite coffee roasters. Take a seat and enjoy the signature brunch menu alongside an expertly prepared latte, watch the roasting team at work or browse the retail story to finesse your own coffee at home.
4. Babka Bakery
Expect challah, blintzes, and borscht at this Eastern European-influenced café, which is a favourite among carb-loving locals, who queue up daily. Babka is a great option for something a little different and grabbing a shoo fly bun for the road is a must. If lines are long, order your pastry to go and walk to Smith Reserve nearby.
5. Sir Charles Fitzroy
A café that roasts its own beans out the back is a very good thing, and even better if they serve an all-day breakfast. Sir Charles specialises in doing reliable breakfast dishes well but it’s the selection of cakes – ranging from red velvet layer cakes to molasses cookies – that will have you staying for an extra coffee or three.
