Spring Street Grocer (next to The European) for gelato. The flavours change frequently and it's all very high quality.
Embla I like the cooking. Dave (Verheul) is a smart chef and Christian (McCabe) is a fantastic host.
Dainty Sichuan You need to go with at least four people so you can try more dishes. I like the green beans with pork, the fried eggplant and the pork rib chilli hotpot.
Kalimera Souvlaki Art (in Oakleigh, 20KM south-east of the city). Their pork gyros platter is an amazing feast.
Tulum Coskun Uysal is creating some of the best contemporary Turkish food I've ever eaten.
Chotto A refined Japanese cafe that I love going to for breakfast. Their 'sakana gozen' set of soy-marinated grilled fish and dashi maki tamago is the perfect way to start the day.
Tipo 00 I love the stylish yet relaxed vibe. Their handmade pastas are insanely good.
Flower Drum Anthony Lui creates beautiful Cantonese food and uses incredibly fresh seafood. Quite possibly some of the best service in Melbourne.
Wine and snacks at Embla, wine and fish at Gerald's Bar (Carlton North). It's all natural at Embla and more old school at Gerald's. Both have amazing service, are relaxed but extremely knowledgeable and have small lists of brilliant food. My favourite bread in Melbourne is at Embla and Gerald's has some of the best fish in the city.
Supernormal: Great buzz from lunch to late night. Always fun, always tasty.
Pho Nom, Annam
Ling Nan My favourite Chinatown supper for live fish from the tank, roast duck and jellyfish salad, and pork intestine stuffed with prawn mousse.
Embla So good. So easy.
Soi 38 Thai noodles, especially boat noodles, hidden in a car park.
Saint Urban (Richmond). A small wine bar doing classic bistro dishes with awesome new world and old world wines.
Jinda Thai (Richmond): Cool, casual Thai venue for street food and home-style dishes
