Put on your comfiest pair of shoes to take the kids on a fun-filled adventure around Melbourne this autumn. Wander through the city and admire the kaleidoscope of autumn colours that transform the city streets. Don't miss the blockbuster events happening around Melbourne. Get your laugh on at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, eat and drink the day away at the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and satisfy your need for speed at the Australian Grand Prix.

Friday night

Start your Melbourne experience with dinner and a show in the heart of the CBD. Say adios to packet tacos and hola to plates of fresh, vibrant Mexican cuisine. Enjoy a soft-shelled delight at Mamasita or tickle your tastebuds with a spicy feast from Fonda Flinders Lane. After you've gorged yourself on food, make your way down to Melbourne's East End Theatre District and take in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood-inspired entertainment with an evening session of HAMILTON.

Saturday morning

Jump out of bed and get set to explore Melbourne. Follow your nose down one of the city's many laneways and start your day with a hot brew and hearty breakfast. Try Manchester Press, where coffee reigns supreme, or head underground in search of a smooth coffee and flaky pastry from Cup of Truth.

Set off on a morning of exploration as you soar to new heights on a trip up the Melbourne Skydeck or let your artistic side loose at Van Gogh at THE LUME.

Jump on a short 15-minute tram ride from the CBD and find yourself in the heart of Melbourne's sports scene. Stand alongside Australia's sporting greats at the Australian Sports Museum. Grab a seat at the MCG for a 2pm kick off, to watch the teams battle it out 'til the siren sounds.

Saturday afternoon

If sport isn't your thing, enjoy a fun-filled afternoon around the harbour. Set your creative side free at ArtVo Immersive Gallery, an interactive art display. Give your camera a workout as you immerse yourself in an array of scenes, locations and situations, with each painted artwork. Head over to Crown Casino for a gelato, slice of pizza or a burger from one of the many food options in the cafeteria.

To top off your afternoon, putt a hole in one at Holey Moley Golf, or put your arcade game skills to the test at Archie Brothers Cirque Electric.

Saturday night

Ready for a spot of dinner? Enjoy the best Southbank has to offer or head back into the CBD and sink your teeth into a cheeseburger at Butchers Diner. Looking for la dolce vita? Nab a bustling kitchen table at Pellegrini's and watch your meal make its way from the pot to your plate via Nonna's ladle.

Before you tuck the kids into bed, soak up the carnival atmosphere at the iconic Moomba Festival. Grab an ice cream for dessert, jump on a ride or try your luck at one of the game stations.

Sunday morning

Visit La Petite Creperie in the heart of the CBD for a taste of Paris without the long-haul flight. If you're after a leisurely start to your day, head to Hardware Societe for traditional European pastries, picture perfect plates, and a cabinet full of sweet treats.

Tummies full, journey into the Royal Botanic Gardens for a guided walk led by a First Peoples guide, where you will gain insight into the ongoing importance of the gardens for the Kulin Nation. Continue your journey into Australia's Indigenous history with a visit to the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where the story of survival is told and celebrated through performances, storytelling and artwork.

Sunday afternoon

After a full morning of learning and exploration, celebrate Indigenous culture with a bite to eat at Big Esso, refuel at the pocket-sized Shandong Mama Mini, or check out the Mod-Asian all-day canteen, Supernormal on Flinders Lane.

It's time to channel your inner Indiana Jones and jump on a boat for an afternoon of riverside exploration. Grab a few snacks or a dozen morish cupcakes from Little Cupcakes on Degraves Street and head down to Sandridge Wharf Southbank, to play captain for a few hours on a GoBoat. The kids will love watching you charter your own tour of the Yarra River, as you take in sites like the MCG, Crown Casino and Docklands.

Extra time

Have some seaside fun in St Kilda, where you can watch yachts on the bay, stroll the esplanade, and soak up the glitz and glamour of Acland and Carlisle Streets.

Walk, cycle or skate under the palms of the foreshore or spend your morning out on the water, where you can sail, windsurf or challenge yourself on a kiteboard.

When your bellies begin to rumble, feast on fluffy vanilla slices, rich chocolate cakes and zesty lemon tarts at one of Acland Street's famous European cake shops, indulge in a creamy bite from one of the precinct's ice creameries, or book for fine dining at Donovans.

Give the kids a taste of resort life with a dip at the historic St Kilda Sea Baths and get their hearts racing as they whirl around on rides at Luna Park.

Wind down after a long day and hire a stand-up paddleboard from the foreshore and enjoy a spectacular sunset from the water. Or settle in with some popcorn and a double feature film at The Astor.
