Overview

With the Yarra river running through the city and Port Phillip Bay's safe and sandy beaches, there are plenty of opportunities for contemplation or adrenaline-fuelled fun in, on and by the water.

Melbourne ahoy

Charter a yacht and sail the sparkling waters of Port Phillip Bay, take a city cruise down the mighty Yarra, or kick it up a gear and book a thrilling jet boat ride in St Kilda.

Paddle power

Hit the rivers or head out onto the bay and explore the city's unique waterways on a kayaking expedition. Take a moonlight paddle under the Bolte Bridge, kayak downstream for a romantic riverside dinner, or journey over rapids to see glow worms in the caves of Yarra Junction.

Beachside summers

Make a splash at the city's popular swimming beaches, including Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, Middle Park, St Kilda, Elwood, Hampton, Brighton, Sandringham, and Williamstown. These main beaches are all manned by lifesavers on weekends and public holidays during the summer months from November to March.

Poolside year-round

If you like swimming but not sand, join locals and visitors alike at one of Melbourne's numerous swimming pools. Many of them are heated so you dive in any time of year.
