Record stores

Whether you're after LPs, CDs or DVDs, you'll find plenty of record stores all across Melbourne that are bucking the global trend toward online sales. From hip hop, dance and indie to metal, folk, jazz and blues, the city has a little corner reserved for every kind of music fan out there.

CBD and inner north

Chase down rare reissues and catch renowned touring artists at Basement Discs in the city or pick up the latest indie releases on deluxe vinyl at Fitzroy's Polyester Records – the epicentre of the city's indie scene. Dancehall, hip hop and electro fans will enjoy the collections at Northside Records on Gertrude Street and Wax Museum in the CBD, while hardcore fiends and metal heads should check out Collector's Corner/Missing Link on Bourke Street and Poison City Records in Fitzroy.

Down south

Staying southside? Browse second hand LPs and new releases at Greville Records in Prahran, a welcome change from the glitz of Chapel Street, and then spend an afternoon with coffee, beer and a live performance at St Kilda's Pure Pop records. Prefer hip hop? Pick up vinyl and merch at Obese Records just round the corner from Greville Street.

Markets and second-hand

For those willing to dig a little deeper there's no end of market stalls and second hand dealers all across the city to scour for hidden vinyl and CD treasures – from Brunswick's Lost and Found Market to Goldmine Records in Carlton North.
