Overview

You don’t necessarily need your own bike to explore Victoria. The state is full of expert-guided bike tours, from gentle inner-city rambles to full-on outdoor adventures. You can cruise the vineyards of the Mornington Peninsula, mountain bike the high country around Bright, or ride over sand dunes at Kilcunda.

E-bike tours

In fact, you might not need to pedal much at all. Operators like Drift Adventures, Otway E-Bikes and Goldfields Bike Tours offer electric bike tours all over Victoria. You can also hire e-bikes from local operators, like Eating Travel, and explore at your own pace.

Mountain bike tours

For adrenalin-pumping, downhill action, you usually want to head to the High Country, but there are great mountain bike trails in Wodonga, Ballarat and the Great Ocean Road, too. Try Mint Tours, High Country Women’s Cycling and The Fastlane Bikademy, if you’re looking for a crash course (so to speak).

Vineyard bike tours

Victoria has several world-renowned wine regions, including the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Bellarine Peninsula, Rutherglen and Beechworth, and you can generally find local tours that combine cycling and cellar door pit-stops (just make sure you pace yourself). Our favourites are Cycling Vine Tours and Tour de Vines, both of which run multiple itineraries throughout the state.

Safety first

Your cycling tour guides will explain the rules of the road (first tip: we ride on the left in Australia), but remember to always wear your helmet, and stick to the speed limit. If you’re cycling on roads, leave plenty of space for cars to overtake, and always use your brake and headlights when the light starts to fade.
